Abstract
This study aimed to observe the visiting dental care system of Fukuoka University Dental Hospital in Japan and to suggest practical implications for establishing a visiting dental care model in Korea, which has recently entered the super-aged society. During the workshop organized by the Korean Academy of Geriatric Dentistry (KAGD), participating dentists directly visited nursing homes and observed the dental care process, infection control procedures, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient evaluation protocols. The observation revealed that the visiting dental service at Fukuoka University was characterized by standardized patient assessment and treatment manuals, an efficient mobile treatment environment using portable dental units, strict infection control procedures, and close cooperation among medical and caregiving staff. This system demonstrated that safe and continuous dental care can be effectively provided to elderly patients with limited mobility. Based on these findings, it is suggested that institutional support in Korea should include the development of workforce allocation, reimbursement systems, infection control standards, and educational programs to establish a sustainable visiting dental care model.
