Abstract

Verbal communication in the present age is fast and convenient due to the development of electronic technology, but conveying the surface meaning is exceedingly confusing as is evidenced by the proportion of errors to the amount of communication. This investigator believes that this situation is one of the cultural dilemmas created by our technology-oriented era. With the proposed problem that new alternative communication concepts should be presented within the deficient interrelationships of these electronic symbols, this researcher inadvertently found new clues in the symbolic relationships between electronic text and images through early single-channel video art works. The present study was initiated with the discovery of the frames of free combinations of image and text in the early video work of video artist Gary Hill, which shows the dissolution and dissociation of linguistic structures through video using language. This is a format that recognizes the possibilities on the other side of language in the interrelationship between text and images. The inexhaustible possibilities of communication in post-structuralistic relationships between language and symbols viewed from the present perspective was found in the analysis of the work by Gary Hill. That is, technology itself becomes yet another space, and the numerous interrelationships that occur between signifier and signified in the space made the investigator reconsider the method in which we can convey humanity and arts, and the invisible emotions they pursue in order to communicate, or the methods in which we can pursue them together. This investigator came to think that, in our time, we should pursue communication in the new media environment with the flexibility of linguistic post-structuralism through mutual connections between electronic texts and the somewhat dissolutive and post-modernistic images attached to it. Furthermore, through the present study, the investigator contends that the possibility of extending personal emotions and social ideologies in the vast domain of language can be sought even in new media art. The open space between the linguistic signifier and signified shown in the work of Gary Hill presents yet another new place in the communication and new media situation of our time.
