Abstract

Bloodstain Pattern Analysis(BPA) has been utilized to interpret blood evidence at crime scenes and reconstruct the sequence of events. However, the 2009 report by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) pointed out that BPA heavily depends on the subjective judgment of analysts and lacks sufficient scientific validation. This study critically examines BPA from three perspectives, drawing on experimental research and cases of misinterpretation. First, although BPA claims a theoretical foundation in physics and mathematics, the complexity of real-world conditions and the impossibility of perfect reconstruction undermine its validity, with error rates showing significant inconsistency. Second, experimental studies on pattern classification and point-of-origin estimation reveal low inter-analyst agreement, raising concerns about reliability. Third, because BPA analysts are often exposed to case information, the method is highly vulnerable to cognitive bias. To address these limitations, this study proposes improvements such as strengthening education and certification standards and introducing peer-review procedures. Ultimately, BPA should be applied with caution, recognizing its inherent limitations and ensuring that interpretations are grounded in sound scientific evidence.
