Abstract
K. Shankar Pillai (1902–1989) was a prominent Political Cartoonist with a very social influence in India. He used to give people a healthy smile with his natural sense of humor, but what he was paying attention to was the activity for children. Shankar’s passionate life, from Kayamkulam, Kerala, located on the southwestern coast of India, cannot be said without the exception of love for children. “Children deserve the best,” the main slogan of the Shankar’s Center for Children (SCC), is a good example. The focus of Shankar’s children’s projects is not a one-off event but a project that can discover the potential of children in the fields of literature and art. It held Shankar’s International Competition for Children(SICC) and on-the-spot Painting Competition for Children for the first time in India, attracting children’s interest and participation in literature and art. Meanwhile even India’s remote villages, where cultural benefits fall short, has tried to get children’s books into their hands. In addition, in order to improve the quality of children’s books, Children’s Book Trust(CBT) was established in 1957 to play a pivotal role in the children’s projects. Meanwhile, Shankar’s International Dolls Museum, established in 1965, is a prominent project for children in Shankar. It happened to be started from a doll presented by the Hungarian Ambassador in 1954. Shankar, who was fascinated by the doll, has been collecting dolls in earnest and has been faithful to the role of diplomat in cultural field by exchanging dolls through exchanges with countries around the world. The dolls workshop, an affiliated organization of the museum, researched and produced folk dolls in each provice of India. And the museum, which is visited by 300,000 people every year, provided children with the opportunity to experience various cultures of countries around the world through dolls. It has created a foundation to lead social change in that it broadened the awareness of children who are future resources. Shankar conceived the Shankar’s Center for Children as a comprehensive space to capture all the projects for children, and left it as his legacy. I hope that the SCC will become a home for children in the world, where children live, communicate, demonstrate creativity, compete and add harmony.
