Abstract

The characteristics of erosional pits, including potholes, developed over the bedrock channel bed of Yongyudam valley, Jirisan(mountains) area are investigated in this study. It is emphasized that effect of the characteristics of bedrock, structural lines and joint on the morphology and evolution courses of erosional pits. The course of Imcheon(river) which forms the Yongyudam valley follows NW-SE and NE-SW lines induced by the boundaries of various lithologies and structural lines. The morphology of the erosional pits is mainly controlled by the direction of joint sets and various resistance to erosion of rocks. The long axis of erosional pits coincide with flow directions which controlled by structural lines. It also found that there is significant corelation between long axis and depth of the pits. It is suggested that the incision along the long axis, also with structural lines, could be dominant than those widening of the pre-existing gaps through the abrasion of inner wall of the pits. The majority of the erosion pits have ‘dish’ shape rather than ‘U’ shape, which is typical to potholes, in this area. It is suggested that the sediment discharge and mean diameter of particles also affects the morphology and evolution of erosional pits in this area. Due to the relatively large size of sediment particles to the opening of the erosional pit, the number of particles are trapped inside the pit would be limited and the abrasive movement of particles in the hole also be minimized. As a result, the ‘U’ shape or typical pothole hard to be formed. Overall particle size on the channel bed decrease downstream, but increased where the tributaries supply coarser materials to the main channel. Shape factors of particles like sphericity index and Corey shape factor showed no significant differences among the sampled points. It can be caused by the intensive inter-particle, particle-channel bed interaction by collision, which result in high abrasion rates.
