Abstract
The morphology of 68 erosional depressions and sediment particles at the Baeksuktan, mid-Gilan riverare investigated to find the characteristics of erosional depressions developed on sedimentary rocks. Most of thefeatures are the linear features like furrows and runnels which are formed along the joint or other structuralweakness. 26 of those forms are regarded as potholes formed by the abrasive action of transporting sedimentparticles. The potholes are also formed along the joint and some of these shows the trapped sediment particles. The pothole looks started as triangular pits which are formed at the crossings of joint sets. Lower part of the pitare abrased by the entrapped particles and plucked by the water and impacting particles. Most of potholesdestroyed by the collapse of the part of its wall by erosional processes. Especially the well of downstreamdirection and near of water vulnerable to this process. It is found that particles trapped in the potholes smaller than those from the point bar, by the results of the studyon the sediment particles. The shape indices of the particles from the potholes also showed that higher values thanthose found from those point bar. The difference in the diameter of particle could be caused by the differenthydraulic conditions of each parts in the event of the flood. The smaller particles have higher sphericity indexvalues as these can easily moved or mobilized with low flow energy conditions.
