Abstract
This essay proposes that portraits by Zeng Jing (1564-1647) embody Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) literati’s eremitic aspirations, illuminating the ways in which the literati visually constructed their reclusive personae. The sitters’ clothing, props, postures, and landscape settings in Zeng’s portraits functioned as visual signifiers of the political disengagement and reclusive lifestyle that his sitters pursued. Zeng’s portraits of Wu Mengyang (1545-ca. 1615) and Weng Dehong (?-1646) exemplify these ideals shared by the artist and his sitters. Zeng employs the conventional scholar-in-landscape composition, with the help of local specialists in landscape painting, in order to emphasize the sitter’s leisure activity (xingle). Thus, contemporary Ming viewers regarded Zeng’s portrayal of reclusive figures in nature as inheriting the tradition of xingle tu (painting of leisure activity). Zeng’s subtle use of Buddhist and Daoist iconography shows how archaism and syncretism permeated the literati’s ethos of reclusion. For instance, Wang Shimin’s (1592-1680) flywhisk and rush mat as well as Weng Dehong’s ruyi scepter and black robes point to the Buddhist and Daoist inclination of these two Confucian scholars. These visual motifs in Zeng’s portraits testify to the fact that late Ming syncretism deeply affected the literati’s practice of reclusion.
