Abstract

This paper is a critical review of The Bourgeois: Between History and Literature by Franco Moretti. Over the years, Moretti has drawn wide attention both in Korea and abroad, through his analyses of the Bildungsroman as a genre that shaped the bourgeoisie, his centrifugal theory of world literature transmitted through European texts, and his introduction of morphological quantitative analysis, which has become a key methodology in digital humanities. In this book, Moretti examines the rise and decline of the bourgeoisie against the backdrop of capitalism, using their literature as an analytical tool. He does so through the three axes that have defined his previous research methodologies—formalism, Bildung, and quantitative analysis. Specifically, he explores how the prose cultivated by the bourgeois class (including the novel) concretized the decentered and unemotional repetitions of everyday life into the governing rules of a capitalist world; how the bourgeois Bildungsroman of Western Europe was unevenly transmitted to the semi-periphery, producing regionally distinct novelistic styles; and how quantitative analysis supports and sustains Moretti’s formalist-based ideas of world literature through a variety of case studies. This paper outlines the contents of The Bourgeois and examines its methodological limitations from the perspectives of formalist approach, literary sociology, and digital humanities. More concretely, it compares Moretti’s arguments with Caroline Levine’s concept of form in literary studies, John Durham Peters’s elemental media theory in literary sociology, and Ted Underwood’s cultural analytics in digital humanities. The review hopes to serve as a useful reference for understanding Moretti’s insights within the fields of Korean literature, world literature, and digital literary studies.
