초록
This study examines the articulatory patterns and characteristics of Korean diphthongs using 3D ultrasound imaging. A Philips 3D/4D EPIQ 7G ultrasound device was utilized to analyze the articulation points of glides and nucleus vowels in each diphthong, as well as the dynamic movements within the diphthongal trajectory. The findings indicate that the glide /j/ is articulatorily similar to the monophthong /i/ and exhibits a stable, fixed distribution. In contrast, /w/ is primarily distributed near /u/ and /o/ but shows a more scattered pattern compared to /j/. Nucleus vowels following glides frequently displayed articulatory undershoot relative to their corresponding monophthongs. Furthermore, diphthongs such as /ㅖ/, /ㅒ/, /ㅞ/, and /ㅙ/, which share identical nucleus vowels, showed minimal distinction in tongue positions. Similarly, the nucleus vowel in the diphthong /ㅚ/ was indistinguishable from those in /ㅞ/ and /ㅙ/. Lastly, /j/-diphthongs, with a fixed glide position, exhibited trajectories determined by the articulation of the following nucleus vowel, whereas /w/-diphthongs showed variability in trajectory length and direction depending on the front-back position of the nucleus vowel or the individual speaker’s articulation strategy.
