Abstract
】Lu Xun's Wild Grasses and Anxieties of Dreaming SpiritShim, hye-youngThis paper, together with my former article on "Lu Xun and the World of Wild Grasses: Existentialist Being of Modern Intellectuals and Their Resistance against Nihilim," examines the content of Lu Xun's existentialist anxieties inherent in the individual works of the aforementioned collection. In addition, I have attempted to disclose in-depth significance of the author's sprititual experience, which is reflected via his existentialist anxieties. I am interpreting that layer of his fundamental experience as "anxieties." On the one hand, those anxieties manifested in the world of Wild Grasses are homogeneous with what Kierkegaard had termed as "anxieties of nothingness" and of "dreaming spirit." On the other, they are related to that "three-layered existentialist anxiety," the concept that Paul Tillich coined basing on Kierkegaard's interpretation of anxieties. Wild Grasses was created in the midst of anxieties of dreaming spirit. This paper argues that those anxieties concern death and destiny, nihilism, and sense of guilt, all of which lead to fundamental dismemberment of self identity.
