A Study on Optical Illusions of Body Parts in Fashion Design - A Focus on 2013 S/S ～ 2017 F/W Women’s Collection -

In the 21st century, women have been playing socially more positive and independent roles. They pursue not only traditional feminine beauty, but also the masculine aspects of men. This is reflected in clothing by capturing a silhouette that emphasize the visual effect of plump breasts and a slender waist, while creating broader shoulders to emit powerful masculinity. For this reason, fashion designers begin to study factors which can decorate the body from all aspects of clothing. In this regard, the art of optical illusion serves as an important method of decorating the body and is widely used in fashion design through color, pattern, structure etc. of clothing. In order to study the application of optical illusion in modern fashion design, based on the definition, principle, basic factors, categories, and expression techniques in optical illusion works, this study focused on three important body parts, which include shoulder, breast and waist. The application cases of optical illusions in the history of clothing were analyzed from the ancient Egyptian period to the end of the 20th century. This study utilized data and images from 2013 S/S to 2017 F/W Paris, Milano, London and New York collections on the official Vogue website at www.vogue.com.
