초록

This paper argues that Griselda’s changes of attire and eloquence are social performances closely related to the chaucerian project of redefining “nobility” and “gentilesse” as the ideology of the newly rising middle class in the late Middle Ages. The “Lenvoy de Chaucer,” with its reference to the Wife of Bath and the old hag’s sermon on “gentilesse,” subverts the image of Griselda as an exemplary wife developed in the story proper while endorsing “nobility/gentillesse” as the source of her genuine virtue. With her correct understanding of the social function of clothing and the power of eloquence, Griselda finally gets her reward. The triumph of this peasant girl, whose life trajectory epitomizes contemporary upward mobility, testifies to social aspirations and the promotion of “nobility” as the ideology of the middling sort.
