Abstract
n a society of alienated labor, collaborative work related to taste embodies potentialities to validate an individual’s identity as a social being. As a domain of such collaborative work, cyber taste community is a significant site of observation. Within cyber space, communication occurs in written forms, which in comparison to face-to-face communication limits contextual understanding. Moreover, there is a temporal lag and spatial gap between the practices of writing on cyber space and of reading on cyber space. Because the writer’s personal information is often undisclosed, the written form of communication is vulnerable to misunderstanding. Despite such potential problems, written form of communication is the only available and effective mode of communication for cyber space communities organized around a particular taste and disposition. The act of writing on communal cyber space, as opposed to on a personal blogsphere, is an act of seeking relations with others who possess similar interests, and one’s taste becomes deeper and wider through these relations. When these writings on cyber space have intellectual purchase, they become public goods. Such production of public goods on cyber taste communities are more akin to “work” than “labor,” which is more economically beneficial than the former. While these writings, which are produced in solitary but nonetheless constitute the identity of the cyber community, are not immediately beneficial, the members of taste communities recognize the writing’s reciprocal nature and are respectful of each writings. If a writing poses a threat to the community, however, the members actively reject it. The communal standard through which a writing is accepted or rejected is situational. As all writings are assumed to support and strengthen the community’s taste through reciprocal participation, a writing cannot be judged by an arbitrary yardstick. Situational norm and reciprocity, therefore, serve as a cyber community’s basic principles of operation.
