초록

By exploring the characteristics of practices within cyber community of taste, this paper aims to contribute to understanding cyber culture. Previous studies have shown that the Internet and digital technologies have shifted the dynamics of social relations and popular art. Broadly, this project within these studies and examines this shift. Specifically, it traces how cyber space allows voluntary contacts between musicians (producers of art) and consumers, contacts previously mediated by an established art market composed of professionals. Within these encounters, the binary relationship of producer/consumer dissolves through the process of converting music into digitalized forms that can be stored and circulated. As such, they all become actors of investment, advertisement and critique. These practices are characteristic of utilizing each actor’s reciprocal ability. The significant of these experimental and creative practices is that they occur through coincidental online encounters between strangers who share similar tastes and dispositions. Within this space of sharing particular tastes emerges a trust that motivates acts of offering one’s ability and efforts without financial reward. Nevertheless, these practices and efforts of creative sharing are sometimes faced with social and legal constraints of the offline world. This paper, thus, argues for a reconsideration of previous claims that render online spaces as operating with its own unique system of relations that is distinguishable from the offline world. Online relations that go beyond the limits of relations of the real world are not relations of virtual reality that exist solely within the cyber space. Rather, cyber communities are spaces of personal reference groups as well as mediating sites of contestation and negotiation for offline power struggles.
