Abstract

This article analyzed that writing contest of modern media influenced the poetic form, content, and how poetic concept unfolded, focusing on the poem “Streets of Seoul” by Kim So-wol. In the process, this article corrects the misquotation of poem “Streets of Seoul” by Kim So-wol and examines how Seoul in the 1920s is represented as a modern urban spaces in the poem. "Streets of Seoul" was the first work elected through a writing contest and was published in the magazine “Hakssaenggye”(Journal of Student) Vol.5(1920.12). Before the publishment of “Streets of Seoul”, the works published by Kim so-wol were mostly based on fixed form of verse, but “Streets of Seoul” was based on long form of free verse, and it was described as streets of seoul at night in June 1920’s. In this article, a change of poetic form by Kim So-wol was identified in a correlation with the media. The original version of “Streets of Seoul” consists of 40 lines in total, which is the form suggested by writing contest of “Hakssaenggye”. Through this, Kim So-wol’s poetry creation changed from fixed form of verse to free verse, and writing contest was related. The writing contest guideline promoted the change of poetic form of “Streets of Seoul”, and the change of poetic form can lead to the change of contents composition. The 1920s Seoul is depicted as a gloomy, shady, and heavy gray place in the poem, which is contrasted with the empire's modern city lining with high-rise modern architecture and with dazzling neon signs. Seoul, a colonial city, is described as the place filled with helpless people who are forced to live in poverty, and imperfect beings are constantly wandering in the place. Seoul is a place of wandering in the poem in that one must constantly wander around without being able to settle, which represents the scene of the passive change for the colonial Chosun to face. The long form of free verse made it possible for various characters and subjects to appear in order to emphasize that Seoul is a place where one cannot settle down and wander. Thus, it was understood that the writing contest of modern media “Hakssaenggye” contributed to lead the change in poetic form, content and emotion in Kim So-wol's creative work.
