Abstract

This study examined the adaptive function of emotional suppression in organizational contexts, challenging traditional views of this emotion regulation strategy as universally maladaptive. Focusing on gender and occupational differences, Study 1 surveyed 133 university students who evaluated the perceived importance of various abilities for achieving organizational success. Results indicated that participants ranked emotional suppression as the second most important factor after cognitive ability, with males rating its utility significantly higher than females. Study 2 investigated the relationship between emotional suppression and perceived achievement among 300 full-time employees in administrative and sales positions. Multiple regression analyses revealed that emotional suppression significantly predicted perceived organizational achievement, particularly among male administrative employees. These effects remained significant after controlling for tenure, income, employment type, and job satisfaction. The findings suggest that emotional suppression, which has been culturally reinforced among men, may function adaptively within certain organizational contexts.
