Abstract

The author analyzed the concentrations of toxic substances of cyanide, CO-Hb, ethanol, and drugs detected in the blood of autopsy specimens, 120 cases of the fire related fatalities (FRF), which were requested to National Forensic Service during from 2013. 11 to 2015. 5. The concentration ranges of detected toxic substances in FRF were 0~6.5 mg/L as cyanide in cardiac blood and 0~2.9 mg/L in peripheral blood, 0~86% as CO-Hb, and 0~0.39% as ethyl alcohol in cardiac blood. Frequently detected drugs in FRF include chlorpheniramine, zolpidem, diazepam and midazolam, they are related to effects of sleeping. The concentration ranges of most frequently detected toxic substances in the blood of FRF were 41~80% as CO-Hb, 0~1 mg/ L as cyanide, and 0~0.50% as ethyl alcohol. In conclusion, the integrated evaluation of toxic substances of CO-Hb, cyanide ion and ethyl alcohol as well as sleeping drugs detected, should be conducted for the decision of the cause of fire deaths.
