동북아시아에서는 중기 플라이스토세에 살았던 몸집 큰 하이에나는 당시의 환경과 연대를 추정하기 위한 기준화석으로 사용되고 있는데 하이에나과에 속하는 짧은 턱 하이에나(Corcutoid Hyaena : Hyaena brevirostris) 가 그 중 하나이다.유라시아 대륙에서 플라이오-플라이토세 시기에 살던 하이에나는 살아있는 종인 hyaena와 brunnea를 포함해서 두 개의 속인 Pachycrocuta KRETZOI (Pliocrocuta KRETZOI 포함)와 Hyaena BRISSON으로 구분된다. Pachycrocuta와 Hyaena의 해부학적 차이는 크게 마지막 아래 옆니와 아래 가위이빨 길이에 있다 ; 즉 M₁길이:P₄길이의 비율에서 볼 때 Pachycrocuta의 비율이 Hyaena의 비율보다 뚜렷하게 크다는 점이다.앞에서 언급한 이빨의 해부학적 특징을 지닌 플라이오 -플라이스토세(특히 중기 플라이스토세)시기 중 중국과 한국 등지에서 출토된 짧은 턱 하이에나로 알려진 크로쿠타형 하이에나는 Hyaena 속이 아닌 속 Pachycrocuta(e.g. P. brevirostris)로 분류하는 것이 적절한 분류이다.
Abstract
At present the ‘crocutoid hyaenas’ from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Eurasia have been used as a index fossil to reconstruct the paleoenvironments and to determine the dates of Middle Pleistocene deposits in the Far Eastern Asia, especially, China and Korea. In recent years the large ‘crocuoid hyaena’ remains from several Middle Pleistocene localities in the Far Eastern Asia have been attributed by several authors to more primitive species of the genus Hyaena. It appears that this large ‘crocuoid hyaenas’ do not belong to the same lineage as extant genus Hyaena and must be referred to the genus Pachycrocuta. Pachycorcuta is distinguished from Hyaena in respect to certain dental indices such the ratio of M₁/P₄. Based on the dental characteristics, the large crocuoid hyaenas from the Middle Pleistocene deposits of China and Korea must be referred to the genus Pachycrocuta(e.g. P. brevirostris) rather than the genus Hyaena(H. brevirostris).
