박목월 시의 ‘돌’ 상징성 연구

Abstract

This study pays attention to symbolism of 'stone' Mok-Wol has been searching in the latter part of his poems and analyzes the characteristics of his world of poetry in detail. The work to examine symbolism of 'stone' that Mok-Wol scrutinized in his later years is very suggestive in respect of its being a component which complete his world of poetry. By identifying 'stone' and himself, Mok-Wol gets out of limitation of human existence which is tied down with life and death, finding sound and ideal image of the ego. Also, through he reaches the identity with the world. He himself who is a 'stone' ends up in a 'house' and moreover a 'universe'. Therefore, 'stone' is centered in existence as the root of universe which unites philosophical time and space. The chance that integrates inconsistent meaning of the universe and the world is the condition of existence that Mok-Wol wanted to confirm and such a recognition of the world leads Mok-Wol to harmony and compromise with the world, leading him to a stage of a broad outlook and transcendency. This recognition is especially expressed in the series of Saryuckjil. As the image awakened in the poem 'Saryuckjil', the poet makes the fatal limitation of existence which is alive or not form. Here, the world of object that is represented only as death excludes any emotional traces by presenting only with cruel thing which doesn't awaken any sentiment of death. Being excluded of emotional trace means the purification of the sense of nothingness and such purification may be a clue that be illuminated newly about the speaker and the object. The poet paid more attention to the essence of general existence through 'stone'. Especially, in the later part of his poems, there are a lot of poems which grasped deeply the meaning of life and death of human existence. They assume an attitude that gets rid of conflict of death by turning the recognition that comes back to the state of nothing and death in the end it into the law of nature of creation and extinction. Therefore, 'stone' can be a main factor that consists of Mok-Wol's poetical view of world over the meaning of simple symbol material, finally clearing the limit of separation and unbalance with the reality which was exposed in the middle period of his poems.
