Abstract

Narcissism, in Sigmund Freud's “On Narcissism”, is regarded as a universally existent unconscious psychological phenomenon(Freud,1914). In artistic creation, narcissism manifests as repeated contemplation and shaping of one's self-image. The self-portrait serves as both a carrier of narcissism and a battleground between the ideal self and the real self. Through self-portraits, artists indulge in self-worship and reveal the illusions of the ideal self. It can be said that the self-portrait and the awareness of ‘narcissism’ are inseparable. As a visual representation of this psychology, the self-portrait not only explores narcissism but can also be understood as the projection and construction of the ideal self in Lacan's 'mirror' theory (Pollock, 2000). Therefore, this study adopts Jacques Lacan’s mirror theory as the core framework(Lacan, 1949), combined with Roland Barthes’ visual semiotics as the analytical method(Barthes, 1977), and selects self-portrait works by Titian Bellini, Frida Kahlo, and Marina Abramović as case studies, focusing on the symbolic significance of visual elements such as character design, colour application, compositional features, and handling of light and shadow. The paper aims to reveal that the self-portrait is not a simple replication of the real self but a carefully orchestrated ‘symbolic’ performance. Through this, the artist creates a controllable, idealised self-image to overcome inner fragmentation and anxiety, achieving a ‘mythical’ status comprehended by culture, accepted by society, and even revered by the artist. This study not only attempts to discover a new definition of narcissism but also provides a new interpretative path for the mechanisms of self-construction in self-portrait creation through the intersection of mirror theory and semiotics.
