Abstract

Nowdays the main interest in our lives is shifting from the matter of well-being to the matter of well-dying, which is represented by the advent of ‘thanatology’ as a brandnew field. In declaring brain death, a poignant example for showing strained relations between the life and death, we are confronted with this matter directly. i.e. by what criteria do we pronounce one dead? The contemporary medical profession regards brain death as real death. This criterion provides legal and ethical reasons to remove organs from a brain-dead body with which the ‘living’ patients extend their lives. Nevertheless, still it remains open to debate whether brain death is a complete end of life or not. Contemporary Korean Buddhism consents to this criterion of pronouncing death, based on some dogmatic suggestions. However, I think, in dealing with Buddhist ‘dogmatic’references this criterion should be treated much more carefully. For, according to the Buddhist texts, brain death would not be reckoned as a proper criterion for pronouncing death. Consequently the removal of organs may cause serious ethical problems in this respect. In this paper, I want to indicate that the criteria defining death should not be proposed based on utilitarian values. This kind of approach is nothing but another dimension of greed. In other words, it is an excessive desire for life extension which leads to the intentional killing of a living being. As the most important value in Buddhist ethics is in neither hurting lives nor killing for others, we must carry out this issue more seriously and carefully with respect to the human rights associated with brain death.
