Abstract

The global spread of COVID-19 forced us to undergo a lasting mourning for the inscrutable loss and made it difficult to anticipate when to discontinue both mourning and its necessary correlative, depression. Sigmund Freud suggests that the nature of constant mourning expressed by a mourning subject is in effect a pathological melancholia. However, Freud’s notion of melancholia can not fully explain the social, affective nature of melancholia that would emerge in the post-COVID-19 era due to its limited focus on a pathological state of mind predicated on narcissistic identification with a lost object. By considering how diverse thinkers have reinterpret the significance of melancholia in a more sophisticated way, I examine the multifaceted psychological mechanism of melancholia in the post-COVID19 era as well as mourning and depression germane to the current situation of the Pandemic. The aim of this essay is thus to investigate the structure and function of melancholia in the post-COVID-19 era that reveals the contradiction and paradox of humanity in the Pandemic and the role of literary narrative to represent their respective inherent dilemma precisely.
