paper examined how the study of urban folklore came to surface in South Korea, what kind of response it received and how it may be studied. As a result, it was found that the study of urban folklore in Korea began by introducing the achievements of urban folkore studies in the foreign scholarship of urban folklore. In response to that, the identity and research feasibility of urban folklore studies were discussed, which showed that they involved a process of suggesting concrete research fields such as urban ghost stories or personal life stories from time to time. Then in 2008 and 2009, something called 'urban folknography' appeared with Seoul as the research target, pointing out the materialization of potential that the urban folklore study had previously shown. In another words, with four types of urban folknography published by the National Folk Museum of Korea and the seven types of urban folklore folknography published by the Seoul Museum of History as the review targets, it became the first case concretely demonstrating the possibility of the urban folklore study. Even though these research collections show the limitation as the resource for the urban folklore place, it was still meaningful, considering the Japanese urban folklore study or the cases of relevant scholarships such as anthropology, sociology or history. Therefore, the author defined the concept of urban folklore study as 'the research and analysis of traditional folklore cultural factors which target the city and share it with the rural area, urban folklore cultural factors which were independently created in the city, and the popular cultural factors which are created in relation to the consumption culture of contemporary city.' The author has also suggested the range, method, and goal of the urban folklore study that is implied by this concept.
Abstract
paper examined how the study of urban folklore came to surface in South Korea, what kind of response it received and how it may be studied.
