Abstract

This paper defines the characteristics of Gukgeori, a Daechwita music of the imperial family included in the gramophone album released in 1907, and finds out with which music this song is related with. This is a music played by 9 chwigosu in Korean music SP album, published by Victor, an American recording company, in 1907, and three songs Hwangsildaechwitae, Byeolgarak, Gukgeori (Hwangsil Gukgeori then on) are listed. This paper has analyzed the constituting sound and structure of the music to define the characteristics of Hwangsil Gukgeori, and extracted the frame melody to compare with other music. In the first half of Hwangsil Gukgeori, four jangdans make up one paragraph with repeating melody, and there are 6 paragraphs, from one to six. Likewise in the second half, eight jangdans make up one paragraph, and there are seven paragraphs, from 7 to 13. In the first half, the melody of first paragraph (jangdan 1-4) is repeatedly played, while in the second half, the seventh paragraph (jangdan 25-32) is repeatedly played in variation. Because the melody lines with the frame note of each paragraph are similar, we can conclude that Hwangsil Gukgeori is a music played in variation, repeating the frame melody. However, the frame melody of the first half A and of the second half B differ only in the speed of beat, but play the same melody, so we can say that frame melody B is a variation of frame melody A. In conclusion, we can say that these two frame melodies are the same. Thus, Hwangsil Gukgeori has a repetitive structure, giving variation in the grace note, rhythm and speed of one type of melody. Among the musics listed in the gramophone album, Chwitagukgeori, performed by Haneungtae, that is the closest to Hwangsil Gukgeori in terms of time, and has similar name, had nothing to do with this music. The melody of Haneungtae’s Chwitagukgeori is a creative variation of Daechwita performed by Haneungtae, and it has stopped being transmitted. Among the music transmitted by current piri jeongak and daechwita Preservation Society that is said to have transmitted the royal court tradition, Neunggehwimori is similar to Hwangsil Gukgeori, and Chwitagukgeori, which is assumed to be similar due to its name, has nothing to do with Hwangsil Gukgeori, but is rather related to Neunggegutgeori. Therefore, it seems when Hwangsil Gukgeori is transmitted within the royal court, it seems to have been transmitted under the name of Neunggehwimori. Among the music transmitted by the Buddhist temples, Cheonsu of Buddhist Monk Byeokeung, which is known to be most authentic of Buddhism taepyeongso music was used for comparison. Although its name, venue of performance and goal are different, we could see that it is related with Hwangsil Gukgeori. Among music handed down among people, Kimjeomseok’s Giltaryeong․Naerimgegarak, Heoyongeop’s Giltaryeong․Hwimori, and Choigyeongman’s Cheonsubara․Hwimori show a little difference in the length of the music and the speed of the beat, but have a very similar frame melody to that of Hwangsil Gukgeori, which shows that they are handed down from Hwangsil Gukgeori. So far, Neunggehwimori of piri jeongak and daechwita Preservation Society, Cheonsu of Buddhist Monk Byeokeung, Giltaryeong․Naerimgegarak of Kimjeomseok, Giltaryeong․Hwimori of Heoyongeop and Cheonsubara․Hwimori of Choigyeongman all differ in the name, but have the identical musical content with Hwangsil Gukgeori, listed in the Victor gramophone album of 1907. Also, if we track back the pedigree of current daechwita lineage music, we can see that it all started from Choiinseo. Thus, in 1906, before the army is dismissed, Hwangsil Gukgeori, performed by the chwigosu of royal court, seems to have been transmitted under various types of names depending on its transmission pedigree, venue of performance and purpose of performance.
