Abstract

William Byrd(c1540-1623)’s Psalmes, Sonets and Songs of Sadness and Piety(1588) is the first printed collection devoted entirely to the music of Byrd and the third book of English songs ever known to have been published. The book consists of 35 five-part songs in three different characteristic groups of text, and reflects the new vogue for songs in the late sixteenth-century England. Most of the songs had originally been for one voice and viol consort but they were adapted to words in all the five parts, reflecting the influence of the current madrigals. The collection was reprinted in nearly record numbers from its first year of issue and such an exceptional publishing success alone testified to the acceptance of the songs and the popularity of the composer. The book’s success was a fresh start for Byrd, who had suffered earlier for matters concerned with his Catholic faith. His involvement in the Throckmorton Plot(1583), a failed Catholic conspiracy, was minimal, but he was treated as one of usual suspects. His forced absence from the Chapel Royal during this period was a great blow to his career. With Psalmes, Sonets and Songs of Sadness and Piety, Byrd was looking to rehabilitate his image, intending to use the medium of print as a means to regain his former status as the Queen’s premier musician. The choice of the poetry attributed to some of the Court’s most famous literary figures also helped this attempt. In the preface of his collection, Byrd emphasized his goal of publication, namely, he wanted to persuade everyone to learn to sing. But with the choice of the poems and the arrangement of the pieces, he was also including political statements, mentioning not only the Catholic cause and the royal wedding, but also the execution of Mary of Scotland in 1587 and the death of Edmund Campion and Sir Philip Sidney.
