Abstract
This study aims to identify intonational differences in the Pohang dialect across generations, orthographic forms, and honorific usage. Thirty female participants—ten each from their late teens, forties, and sixties—read three paragraphs three times. From these readings, eight sentences—four dialectal and four standard forms—were selected and analyzed using the Tilt model, focusing on event types and parameters. A presence test of event types by generation revealed that the MONO type, predominantly found in teenagers, was significantly associated with generational differences. For the event type RF, a Type-Ⅲ ANOVA showed a significant interaction effect between [generation]*[honorific] in duration. The main effects of [generation] were significant in both amplitude and duration, while [honorific] showed significance in duration. Pairwise comparisons confirmed differences in amplitude and duration across conditions. The analysis indicates that teenage intonation is shifting toward a flatter pattern with reduced amplitude compared to older generations, indicating a weakening of traditional intonational features. Furthermore, differences in estimated means across conditions highlight the need to consider not only generational factors but also orthographic form and honorific usage, underscoring the importance of incorporating diverse variables in intonation research.
