Abstract
This paper investigates the performance degradation mechanisms of template-matching trackers under laser dazzling effects. An experimentally grounded image-synthesis pipeline was developed using real sensor measurements of dazzling patterns to replicate saturation and chromatic distortion phenomena in vision sensors. The pipeline statistically defines saturation regions and dynamically composites them into public datasets, enabling systematic evaluation of tracker robustness under varying laser power, divergence, and modulation conditions. Experimental results show that even under low-influence dazzling conditions, where the target remains visually observable, the tracking success rate of the Sobel–NCC combination drops significantly from approximately 0.6 to around 0.3, indicating substantial performance degradation without full saturation. Under over-saturation conditions, the success rate further collapses to below 0.1, while Sobel–SSD exhibits an immediate outer-jump failure due to severe central mismatch. These results provide a quantitative understanding of how laser dazzling distorts feature correlation and similarity computation in vision-based tracking algorithms, offering practical insights for designing robust electro-optical guidance and protection systems.
