Abstract

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to help psychodramatists better understand the process of sexual offending in order to enhance the effectiveness of psychodrama intervention. Methods:Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five sexual offenders under probation from July to September of 2012. Data were analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological data analysis. Results:The analysis resulted in nine essential components, 28 sub-components and 57 meaningful units. Nine essential components are as follows: ‘encounter: curiosity from ordinary life,’ ‘till the day of offending: changing from curiosity to sexual expectation,’ ‘at the moment of offending: forcing sexual act under alcohol intoxication,’ ‘during the offending: unexpected response from victim, and frustration,’ ‘till arrest: dark side of mind,’ ‘arrest: release of anxiety,’ ‘family and myself: ambivalence,’ ‘community and myself: probation, women, alcohol,’ ‘current myself: can I go back to ordinary life?’ Conclusion:The findings could be used as a valuable guide for psychodramatists to help sexual offenders change their cognitive, emotional, interpersonal patterns during psychodrama intervention.
