Abstract

This study aims to analyze the safety management systems of professional sports clubs in Korea from the perspective of safeguarding athletes’ rights, applying John Rawls’ theory of justice as the theoretical framework. Using a case of an injury sustained during a professional baseball team’s training session in August 2025, the study examines structural issues observed in official regulations, operational practices, and post-incident responses. Through literature review, regulatory analysis, and comparative study of international cases, it is found that Korea’s current safety management system is insufficient in universality, consistency, fairness, and accountability, with structural inequalities arising from differential treatment based on players’ market value and status. Such disparities violate both the principle of equal basic liberties and the principle of fair equality of opportunity, and fail to meet the “difference principle” when the inequalities do not enhance the position of the least advantaged. In contrast, Major League Baseball (MLB) in the United States and Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) in Japan have standardized protocols for injury prevention and rehabilitation, along with mechanisms to hold coaching staff accountable, thereby ensuring consistency and fairness in safety management. Drawing from these international practices, this study proposes: (1) the establishment of league-wide standardized safety management manuals, (2) equitable allocation of safety resources regardless of player value, (3) the introduction of independent investigation and accountability procedures, (4) strengthening the intervention rights of players’ unions, and (5) fostering an organizational culture that prioritizes safety. This research not only expands the applicability of Rawlsian justice to sports settings but also underscores the necessity of institutional designs that guarantee athlete safety as a universal right.
