Abstract

Cheoyong-Ga is a poem composed with background of the period of king Heongang when the aristocratic cultures of Shilla peaked. The culture would be reflected on poems of the days. The acute senses of people of that days are elaborately constructed in Cheoyong-Ga. This poem was composed in the situation of triangular love affair. In this point we could pay attention to the speaker's sensitive reactions and emotions. In the first half of the poem speaker's sight move from broad place to limited place, and from outside to inside. Also space of the poem is changed from downtown area to home and to bedroom through the speaker's movement. The process to taking closeup of bed-scene by the speaker's visual sense on the background of moonlight throws impressive impact to the readers. In the process of visual sense, tactual sense is also operating. The speaker faces the bed-scene under the condition that his body is somewhat burning by moonlight. The expression of 'legs are four' in fourth line evokes the sense of touch vividly. After this line the description of quarrel for one woman between two men is connected. This quarrel also evokes the sense of touch. Of course the spirit of contagious disease himself is a symbol of tactual sense. In the fifth and sixth line the speaker's consciousness operates actively. The consciousness inclines himself to outside and determines his attitude with cognition to complex situations. So he steps back to keep his body and mind clearly through avoidance from quarrel for woman. This is a consequence of operation of consciousness succeeded intuition of senses. The turn of attitude makes readers to sense the poetic tension and dramatical conversion of the poem. As this Cheoyong-Ga is a poem which poetic thoughts are developed with sense of sight and sense of touch contributing to construction of themes. The cultural trend which people regards sense as important thing in middle of 9C would be reflected on this poem.
