In this essay I have tried to show how “The Fisherman” represents a singular and fascinating attempt to reinvent the self, briefly locating the poem in the development of Yeats’s poetical concerns. I have scrutinized the process of poetic invention itself, by going back to the first documented draft of the poem, thus bringing out how the poem seeks to construct and preserve an image of pure creativity, even while it subjects that image to duplication and complicating extension. In his brave turn towards a more personal, embodied poetic self in the 1910s he appears, on the other hand, to be a late modernist in advance. At the same time, his skepticism about his modern audience and turn towards an idealized and solitary rural figure also show that he still engaged in rewriting Romanticism. “The Fisherman” shows us a marvellously reinventive poet close to his very best.
