Abstract

Objectives: This study evaluated the clinical effectiveness of Korean Medicine (KM) treatment in female infertile patients and compared outcomes of KM monotherapy and KM+ART integrated treatment through a retrospective chart review. Methods: Medical records of 30 female infertility patients who visited the Korean Medicine Clinic from April 2019 to April 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were categorized into KM alone group (n=17) and KM+ART integration group (n=13) based on concurrent ART use. KM treatments included individualized herbal medicine prescriptions, acupuncture, moxibustion, electroacupuncture, and pharmacopuncture. The primary outcome was clinical pregnancy rate within 3 months after treatment completion. Secondary outcomes included improvement in accompanying symptoms and delivery rates. Results: The overall pregnancy success rate was 43.33% (13/30 patients). The KM alone group achieved 47.05% (8/17) and KM+ART integration group achieved 38.46% (5/13) pregnancy rates. Among 13 pregnant patients, 5 delivered, 1 miscarried, and 7 were lost to follow-up. Among accompanying symptoms, improvement was most notable in dry fever. Herbal medicine treatments primarily focused on kidney-tonifying approaches, with KM group predominantly using Tosajaboyang-tang, while KM+ART group favored Baeranchacksang-bang and Jogyeongjongok-tang for ovulation and implantation support. One adverse event (herbal medicine-related bloating) was reported. Conclusions: This study indicates that KM treatment, whether used alone or integrated with ART, shows promising pregnancy success rates for female infertility patients.
