Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how Korean public school teachers develop professionally within the context of the International Baccalaureate Educator Certificate (IBEC) program, providing a deeper understanding of teacher learning and offering practical implications for professional growth. A qualitative case study was conducted with 13 public school teachers who completed the IBEC program at A university, where data was collected and analyzed based on focus group interviews. The findings indicate that teachers experienced a three stage developmental trajectory: (1) recognizing the limitations of the existing education system and confronting personal professional crises; (2) internalizing an educational philosophy and transforming instructional practice through the IBEC learning process; and (3) cultivating collaborative professionalism with colleagues and evolving into reflective practitioners. Throughout this process, the IBEC program functioned as a crucial mechanism by providing a psychologically safe space for deconstructing and reconstructing existing beliefs, structured autonomy that connects pedagogical philosophy with practice, and a shared professional language that fosters community. This study highlights the professional development of IB teachers in the Korean public school context, offering academic and practical implications for the implementation of IB programmes and the advancement of teacher professionalism in South Korea.
