Abstract

Research on the relationship between manufacturing and distribution firms has been conducted from various perspectives. Particularly, in organizational studies, the positive factors influencing relationship quality have been continuously investigated for their role in enhancing collaboration among relationship members and sustaining transactions. Conducted within the home appliance manufacturing and distribution industry, this study aims to focus on opportunistic behavior within the context of relationship quality resulting from the influence strategies employed by manufacturing firms. While previous studies have categorized influence strategies into coercive and non-coercive based on the intensity of the message delivery from source to target firms, this research specifically centers on coercive influence strategies. It particularly explores the strategic behavior of manufacturing firms that aim to exclude target firms from the path for profit maximization, defining this as "disintermediation threats," and seeks to measure its effects as a moderating variable. The analysis reveals that among the four coercive influence strategies; promise, request, threat, and legal petition significantly positively influence opportunism, while promise and request exhibit negative impacts, contradicting the initially hypothesized relationships. Additionally, the results show that path exclusion threats enhance the explanatory power of adopted paths, with the threat component of coercive influence strategies, particularly its message delivery method, increasing the likelihood of elevating target firms' opportunism when path exclusion threats are high.
