Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explore the methodology of new writing education through the writing training method of Natalie Goldberg (born 1948): Instead of specific information or knowledge that is central to practical writing education, Goldberg emphasized the primary attitude hidden under the cover of practicality. This brings the problem of subdued attitudes to a natural level to the center of writing, demonstrating the possibility of a new writing education beyond the level of information in the age of science and technology. Above all, Goldberg’s writing methodology is characterized by its emphasis on “unthought” when writing. This rejects the view that thinking comes first and writing is the product. In this paper, we examine the conceptual relevance of writing and thinking and cognition through the implications of thinking in “unthought”. In Chapter 2, this was looked at from the perspective of writing as an idea that focuses on the “act” of writing. As consciousness and body are connected to one through hands, it is one’s “mind” that the writer should meet through writing as an act of thought. At this time, the mind is connected with perception in cognitive science. The concept of writing and the relationship between cognition and mind were summarized together by examining it from the perspective of cognitive science. Goldberg’s writing methodology, from the perspective of embodied mind, is not a reproduction of what has been decided or given, but rather a creation and creation of the world. From this point of view, rather than the product of writing itself, we want to move toward creating new experiences and worlds based on the writer’s body/mind, life and experience. Through these embodied mind or mind-writing, new goals or directions in writing education can be found. This is also one direction that writing education should pursue in an environment of cognitive operation beyond consciousness due to the development of science and technology. In this regard, Goldberg’s practice/performance theory, which is faithful to the basics of writing and oriented toward the embodied mind, which is mind-writing has room for further discussion in the future. This article is a consideration for this.
