초등 및 중학생의 다문화 수용성에 미치는 요인 탐색

본 연구에서는 한국아동청소년 초4 및 중1 패널 데이터(KCYPS)를 사용하여 아동 청소년들의 다문화 수용성과 관련되는 여러 변인과의 관계를 위계적 회기 모형을 사용하여 살펴보았다. 2차년도의 변인들을 우선적으로 2차년도 다문화 수용성 예측변인으로 사용하고 나중에 1차년도의 변인들을 사용하였다. 특히 변화하는 시민의식이 다문화 수용성에 어떤 관련이 있는지를 살펴보았다. 초4패널에 비하여 중1패널의 시민의식과 다문화 수용성은 낮았다. 초등학교 5학년의 경우, 성별, 부모교육 해외여행을 제외하고 독서시간, 시민의식, 성취도는 다문화 수용성과 통계적으로 유의한 정적관계가 있었다. 초4시기에 얻어진 다른 변인들을 통제한 후에도 초5때의 이들 변인은 통계적으로 유의하였다. 초4 시민의식만의 통계적으로 유의하게 2차년도 다문화 수용성을 예측하였다. 중1패널의 경우, 부모교육, 중2해외여행경험 및 중2성취도는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았으나, 성별, 중2독서시간, 및 중2시민의식은 중2 다문화 수용성에 미치는 효과는 통계적으로 유의하였다. 여학생의 경우 남학생에 비하여 통계적으로 유의하게 다문화 수용성이 더 높았으며, 독서시간의 효과는 매우 작았다. 2학년 때의 변인을 통제한 후에도 성별, 1학년 때의 시민의식과 해외여행 경험은 통계적으로 유의하게 2차년도 다문화 수용성을 예측하였다. 시민의식과 다문화 수용성을 제고하기 위한 과외활동과 시간사용에 관한 심도있는 추가 연구가 필요하다.

Abstract

This study investigated the relation between multicultural receptivity and civility/citizenship characteristics among different grade cohorts using higher order regression model. Survey data were collected from cohorts of elementary school 4th graders and middle school 1st graders over two years. Our findings include the following: (1) In the case of elementary 5th graders, controlling for gender, parental education, oversea travelling experience with parents, hours spent for reading, civility and citizenship values, academic achievement showed statistically significant relationship with multicultural receptivity score. (2) In the case of middle school cohort, parental education, overseas travelling experience were not statistically significant, but the effects of gender and hours spent for reading, civility(civic) and citizenship values on multicultural receptivity were statistically significant. (3) Compared to elementary 4th grade cohorts, 1st year middle school cohort’s level of civility and citizenship values and multicultural receptivity scores were low. (4) Female students in the middle school cohort scored higher in multicultural receptivity than male students, but the effect of hours spent for reading was very small. (5) The cohorts’1st year scores seem to predict the 2nd year multicultural receptivity both at the elementary and middle school levels. Specifically, with the first-year middle school cohort, overseas travelling experience and civility and citizenship values were statistically significant predictors of multicultural receptivity. (6) Finally, in the case of the middle-school cohort, gender and the 2nd year civic and citizenship values were also statistically significant. We suggest that in depth studies to enhance civility and citizenship values and multicultural receptivity are needed.
