Abstract

This study is to examine the change in the causes of death in Korea from 1983 to 2003, using the number of death per cause published by National Statistical Office (NSO) (www.nso.go.kr). The causes of death vary from the gender. The main causes for male are the neoplasms, the circulatory system diseases and external casuses of mortality, while the female death is mainly originated by unspecified symptoms in addition to the circulatory system diseases and the neoplasms. But the ratio of the external causes and the circulatory system diseases are declining, on the contrary to increasing pie of neoplasms in male death causes. In female death, the unspecified symptoms and the circulatory system diseases are in downward trend compared to increasing neoplasms. The major causes of the male death are differentiated per age such as transport accidents and suicide in the 30s, liver diseases in the 40s, liver cancer in the 50s and cerebrovascular diseases and lung cancer. The main causes for female teenager's death are transport accidents and suicide, and the suicide has exceeded the transport accident in the 20s and 30s recently. The cerebrovascular diseases are rated to the highest from the 40s, and the diabets mellitus is second to the cerebrovascular diseases in the 60s.
