이러닝의 개념화를 위한 일 고찰

최근 ‘이러닝’은 컴퓨터의 웹 환경을 기반으로 시공간의 제약 없이 지식과 정보에 접근하며 이루어지는 학습을 총칭하며 사용되고 있지만, 웹기반학습, 웹기반교육, 웹기반훈련, 원격학습, 온라인학습 등의 유관어에 의해서도 혼용되고 있다. 그러나 사회적 또는 학문적인 합의나 고찰 없는 용어들의 혼재는 개념 그 자체 및 연구나 실천 등의 혼란을 야기 시키고 있다. 따라서 본 고에서는 이러닝과 유관어들의 개념적 구분을 통해 각각의 용어들이 보다 적절하게 사용될 수 있는 지표를 마련해 보고자 하였다. 이러한 목적을 위해, 본 연구에서는 주로 이러닝과 유관어들, 즉, 가상교육, 사이버교육, ICT활용교육, 웹기반교육, 온라인교육, 원격교육의 주요 속성을 원격교육의 변천사 및 테크놀로지의 발달사에 비추어 고찰하는 통사적인 접근방식과 각 용어가 다양한 실천 장면에서 활용되는 양태 등에 대한 고찰을 통해 공통적이거나 차별적인 주요 속성을 비교 분석하였다. 이를 토대로, 다른 유관어들과 차별화된 이러닝의 핵심적인 속성으로서 이러닝의 지식경영적인 측면이 부각되었고, ‘이러닝’은 e-Training과는 달리, 테크놀로지를 총체적으로 활용하여 지식과 성과를 강화하기 위한 광범위한 학습해결안을 제공하는 것으로 개념화 하였다. 본 연구의 접근 방식은, 한 사회에서 새로 통용되는 개념에 대한 ‘시대사적인 변천’ 및 ‘동시대의 활용태’라는 두 가지 축을 중심으로 총체적으로 접근하고 있으며, 아울러 이러닝에 대해 테크놀로지 위주의 관점이 아니라 교육적인 관점으로 접근하고 있다는 점에서 후속 논의의 활성화에 기여할 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
A recent use of the term e-learning posits that it provides learners with knowledge and information in web-based learning environments. Today, in addition to e-learning, there are many types of learning that we deliver in web-based environments, such as web-based learning, web-based education, web-based training, distance learning, and online learning. Unless we come up with what are the social or academic consensus on the concept of each terms and how the term e-learning differs from other similar terms, we could end up with conceptual confusion in our research and practices. Thus in this paper we address what is meant by the term e-learning by comparing its characteristics with those of similar types of web-based learning and further more, offer the references for the suitable use of each term. To conceptualize e-learning, we analyzed the similarities and differences of main characteristics of e-learning and other terms by employing both a historical approach that examines the terms in the light of the evolution of distance education and technology and a comparative approach that explores the terms according to the concurrent, day-to-day practices when and where they take place. Especially, the similarities and differences of main characteristics of e-learning and other terms as presented by comparisons of the type of education, the educational materials and media, the unit of education, the time of transaction, the initiation of education, and the degree of interaction. Here we have found an aspect of knowledge management as core characteristic of e-learning in contrast with other similar terms. We conceptualize the term e-learning as it provides learners with a wide range of learning solutions that strengthen learners knowledge and productivity using diverse technologies, indicating where it differs from e-training.
