초록

This paper views universities as primary regional actors who can play a significant role in promoting sustainable community. They have considerable amounts of resources such as knowledge, energy, and institutional capacity to develop and practice innovative ideas associated with sustainability, mainly through teaching, research, and community services. In addition, universities have extensive institutional networks through which local and regional stakeholders are reached out to garner their collaborative efforts and coordinate their interests toward sustainable development (SD). This paper examines how universities can play a major role in promoting sustainable development in their regions. It adopts Grand Valley State University as a case to illustrate their activities associated with sustainability inside and outside its campus. It presents three major stages of knowledge-intensive activity culminated with the forms of collaborative partnerships: (1) knowledge development, which occurs through curriculum development, classes, research forum and presentation, and research and development (R&D); (2)knowledge application, which describes the link between knowledge and practice as presented in sustainable campus activities; and (3)knowledge transfer, which knowledge developed and applied around the university’s campuses is transferred to the community via community partnership and collaboration projects.
