「오셀로」와 「莊子休鼓盆成大道」의 비교 연구: 여성인물의 심리를 중심으로

Abstract

This article intends to explore Shakespearean drama “The Othello” and “The Story of Jangja Who Accomplished Great Awakening by Playing the Jar,” a uihwabon novel by Pung Mongnyong who was active in Myung Period, from the standpoint of comparative study and especially focusing on the mental state of women characters. What are common to these two works is that two women’s husbands are possessed with infidelity delusion, thereby causing their wives’s deaths; one is killed by her husband and the other commits suicide. Women in a patriarchal society in which these works are based on could do nothing but obey men— usually father and husband—and patriarchal canons and values, following orders, commands or instructions of the society. To the extent that women’s desires, opinions, and behaviors were repressed on the one hand, and masks of good daughter and subordinate wife were rising to the surface on the other. With employing these two aspects of women’s lives as Jungian terms of “shadow” and “persona”, this article investigated the dynamics of the two aspects.
