Abstract

Research topics: This study aims to investigate the meaning of effective language instruction, grounded in the field experiences of doctoral students. · Research background: Enhancing teacher professionalism is pivotal for educational quality, with graduate studies offering opportunities for academic reflection and practical problem-solving. This study leverages the unique perspective of graduate students with prior field experience, integrating research insights with practical teaching to concretize 'effective language instruction' and ultimately improve early childhood language education. · Differences from prior research: While previous studies have largely focused on in-service or pre-service teachers' language teaching beliefs and strategies, this research uniquely examines 'effective language instruction' from the dual perspective of field-experienced doctoral students, acting as both practitioners and researchers. It further aims to clarify how the integration of practical experience and academic inquiry shapes teachers' reflective perceptions and ultimately influences instructional quality. · Research method: This study utilized 13 sessions of group interview transcripts and participant journals collected from March to June 2025 as primary data, supplemented by researcher journals. Interviews were conducted in a semi-structured, conversational format, with all content recorded, transcribed, and reviewed with participant consent. Research results: The study's findings reveal, first, that effective language instruction is a 'dynamic, co-constructed experience' emerging through interaction with young children. Second, it highlights that 'teacher professionalism is the essential foundation' for such instruction. Third, participants critically reflected on the meaning of effective teaching amidst various 'fluctuations,' including the tension between play and learning and differing parental expectations. Finally, the study proposes practical approaches for 'effective language instruction' that ultimately foster a 'rich language environment cultivating life competencies' for children's holistic development. · Contribution points and expected effects: This study academically contributes by re-examining the essence of effective language instruction and the importance of teacher professionalism from the profound perspective of a practitioner-researcher. It also analyzes various practical challenges encountered in the field and proposes tangible solutions. The findings are expected to enhance teachers' reflective practices, foster high-quality child-centered language education, and promote positive communication and cooperation with parents in early childhood language education settings.
