Abstract
This study attempts to classify the English ‘f-words’ with an emphasis on their pragmatic roles. To establish them, we analyzed the functions of f-words based on their part of speech and structural distribution in BNCweb’s spoken data. The results indicate that the key distinction between f-words that are taboo and those that are acceptable in daily life is whether a person is an object or target of expression. As taboo, f-words accentuate insulting expressions about the target individual, to refer to a conversation recipient with hostile or violent language, or to describe sexual activities involving a specific person. In daily f-words, the object being talked about is often a situation. Even if the object is a person, that person does not exist in the conversation or is the speaker. Daily functions of f-words include idiomatic expressions that can be replaced with other emphatic expressions highlighting nouns or adjectives and adding the speaker’s feelings, and expressions that relieve personal feelings for specific occasions. This study contributes to creating learning materials for conversational English.
