Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the dropout factors in underprivileged gifted students in order to reduce the dropout rate and increase the participation rate in long-term gifted education programs. The program observed in this study has more than 400 underprivileged student participants in a year, and one mentor teacher per one student is assigned to operate a customized gifted education program. Dropout factors in this analysis are; region (urban, rural), gender (male, female), grade (4- 10), gifted education field (mathematics, science, math/science, information, invention, humanities and social science), underprivileged status (reason of social and economic, rural areas, principal's recommendation, ) and number of mentoring sessions (0-5, 6-10, or 11+). The most important factors that affected dropouts were analyzed through the logistic regression analysis. As a result, the grade, type of the underprivileged, and number of mentoring sessions were major factors. Based on the results, the need for career mentoring and counseling for students with high dropout rates was stressed. Additionally, how to connect and support the program management institutions, teachers, and was proposed.
