Abstract

This paper examines the philosophical and hermeneutic structure of the Five Element Typology (Ohaengin, 五行人), a traditional East Asian system for classifying human dispositions, within the framework of classical physiognomy (Gwan-sanghak). Rooted in the cosmological principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Phases (陰陽五行), the Ohaengin model divides human constitutions and temperaments into five archetypes—Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水)—as systematically articulated in classical medical and physiognomic texts such as the Huangdi Neijing. The study first elucidates the ontological and metaphysical underpinnings of this typology, analyzing how it served as a foundational tool for understanding human nature in traditional Gwan-sanghak literature. It then engages in a critical comparison with modern theoretical frameworks, including the philosophical critique of essentialism, cognitive science’s categorization theory, and dimensional approaches in personality psychology. Instead of construing the Ohaengin as a deterministic or essentialist model, the paper reinterprets it as a symbolic framework for cultural self-understanding and ethical reflection. Ultimately, the study proposes that the Ohaengin typology, recontextualized as an ontological symbol rather than a rigid classificatory scheme, may offer novel insights into the human condition and foster integrative dialogues between classical Eastern thought and contemporary humanistic scholarship.
