In 1950’s, Korean National Association of North America(KNA), one of the organizations led the Korean independence movement before 1945, encountered adversities from inside and out. Korean Consulate was hostile against KNA as it was designated as ‘anti-government forces’ for opposing Syngman Rhee. Internally, KNA faced decline of membership and influence over Korean community. Therefore, core members in the leadership, ‘Reconstruction group’, proposed ‘reconstruction plan’ with three items: to change the name of KNA and membership system, and to build Korean community center. Reconstruction group intended the unification of Korean Americans as well. The group considered abandoning political stance and making KNA to serve only social purpose was the only way to embrace everyone. However, the idea of changing the name of KNA could not form favorable public opinion within the membership. After April Revolution, the group detoured the membership, which the opposition strongly condemned. As the opposition had the majority in the membership, the group had no choice but to stand down, and leave the leadership.
