Abstract

Background Different generations tend to adopt information technology differently and use it in different ways. These differences in generations have a significant impact on developing their mental model and affect the graphic user interface design of everyday digital devices. An icon in particular, being an important part of graphic user interface, can be viewed differently depending on the user’s generation as it is a symbolic representation of an object or action, which varies based on experience. Methods This research explores how each generation views and recognizes icons used in information technology, and how certain aspects of each generation has affected their perception and recognition capabilities. Result Tests were conducted in order to measure each generation’s ability to recognize icons, and then analyzed to identify which icon characteristics enhanced icon recognition by generation. Conclusion This research culminates with a discussion on how these findings can aid designers to develop digital device icons, that are more appropriate and accessible for the intended generation.
