Abstract

In the war film <Welcome to Dongmakgol>(2005), Dongmakgol is both a hétérotopies and a space where deep ecology is realized. Dongmakgol is an “other space” that exists apart from the real world in which the Korean War is taking place, while at the same time functioning as a “realized utopia” where the residents live by practicing an ecological way of thinking in stark contrast to war. Dongmakgol is a hétérotopies of crisis for Seo Taek-gi, a young North Korean soldier, and Pyo Hyun-chul, a South Korean soldier who deserted due to the trauma of the Han River bridge explosion. In Dongmakgol, the two overcome their crises and are reborn as different people. It is also a hétérotopies of a garden where mutually incompatible elements coexist: South Korean (and American) forces and North Korean forces, once bitter enemies, live side by side, and civilians care for the soldiers, giving the village the character of an open space. The basic premise of <Welcome to Dongmakgol> is structured around a binary opposition. The villagers, who have lived in Dongmakgol for generations, inhabit a life shaped by the accumulation of time, while the soldiers are transient outsiders merely passing through. Yet, the villagers welcome these outsiders and live alongside them. Through this hospitality, the antagonistic relationships between the characters dissolve, and Dongmakgol is transformed into an ecological space of life and peace.
