연희전문의 설립은 일제의 종교교육 금지정책 아래에서, 선교의 목적과 방법론 등을 둘러싸고 치열하게 전개되었던 선교사 내부의 논쟁 끝에, ‘기독교주의’를 근거로 장로교, 감리교 등의 연합을 통해 이루어진 것이었다. 연희전문은 ‘기독교주의’를 바탕으로 조선 민족의 지도자를 양성하겠다는 학교설립의 목적을 달성하기 위해 기독교 종교교육을 실시했다. 연희전문의 기독교 종교교육은 ‘기독교주의’의 실천을 목적으로 하며 학생들의 자발적인 참여를 원칙으로 했다는 점에서 기독교 교양교육의 시초였으며, 궁극적 가치 지향성을 교육하는 ‘종교적 교육’의 원형으로 중요하다. 연희전문의 기독교 종교교육은 학생들의 반발과 일제의 종교교육 정책 변화에 따라 우여곡절을 겪으면서 1940년대 초반까지 계속 이어졌으나, 그 성과에 대해서는 보다 깊은 논의가 필요하다.
Abstract
The establishment of Chosen Christian College(C.C.C) was the result of fierce debates among missionaries, revolving around the purpose and methodology of missionary work, under Japan’s policy of prohibiting religious education. It was achieved through the collaboration of denominations like Presbyterian and Methodist, based on “Christian principles” as its foundation. C.C.C conducted Christian religious education with the aim of nurturing leaders for the Korean people. The Christian religious education at C.C.C aimed to put “Christian principles” into practice and emphasized the principle of voluntary participation by students. It served as a pioneering example of “Christian liberal education” and holds significant importance as the prototype of “Religious education” that focuses on ultimate values. Christian religious education in C.C.C,s continued to face ups and downs until the early 1940s, in response to student resistance and changes in the Japanese government's religious education policies. However, a more in-depth discussion is needed regarding its outcomes.
