Abstract

This study examined how parental achievement expectations influence academic achievement in terms of the indebtedness that children feel toward parents in South Korea and whether this relationship was moderated by levels of daily parental control. We analyzed data from the Korea Educational Development Institute’s Korean Education Longitudinal Study about students in the second (6,472 students) and third years of middle school (6,568 students). We conducted mediation and multi-group analyses. The results revealed that perceived parental achievement expectations positively affected academic achievement and that this relationship was partially mediated by indebtedness and effort. Perceived parental achievement expectations positively influenced both effort and feeling indebtedness toward parents. Effort was positively associated with academic achievement, whereas indebtedness showed a negative association. Indebtedness increased effort, resulting in a multi-step mediation effect of indebtedness and effort. This structural relationship differed by daily parental control levels. In the high parental control group, the positive direct and indirect effects of parental achievement expectations on academic achievement were smaller than those in the low parental control group. This was attributable to a stronger negative effect of indebtedness on academic achievement in the high parental control group. These findings highlight the ambivalent nature of indebtedness and the moderating role of parental control in the relationship between parental achievement expectations and academic achievement.
