Abstract

This paper investigates Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic career during the 1920sand 1930s, focusing in particular on how her work and persona was ‘gendered’in multiple folds. The paper particularly focuses on the discussion of images of‘flower’ and ‘nude,’ which have long been considered as ‘female’ subjectmatters throughout the history of art. The study begins with the popularinterpretation that reads O’Keeffe's flower paintings in association with thefemale body. Such Freudian reading of O’Keeffe’s painting first started fromthe art critical language of Alfred Stieglitz. The personal relationship O’Keeffeshared with Stieglitz provides a further base for discussion on Stieglitz’s nudephotographs of O’Keeffe’s body. In addition, Stieglitz’s attempt to devise anew formulaic language identifying American Art also forced Stieglitz and hisfollowers to interpret O'Keeffe's work as ‘female’ which functioned as thecounterpart of other works which he considered to be ‘male’. O’Keeffe’sreaction to such imposed gender position leads to a possibility for re-readingthe works with a more feminist stance. Accordingly, the images of flower andnude gain new potential as a language of resistance against the popular notioninitially embedded in those images.
